Teaching Philosophy
Most teaching philosophies are written stating what a teacher believes about a student. Over the years my teaching philosophy has morphed into a group of core fundamentals. The essence of my teaching philosophy is stated in the following principles:
1) I am a teacher who wants to learn and become a part of the school community culture.
Every Child's background is invaluable to who they are as learners and should be fostered and respected.
In order to teach children well, you need to know where they come from and what they value.
2) I am a teacher who needs to actively listen, observe and absorb all my student's strengths and weaknesses.
Every child is a unique individual, and if you learn to build up his or her strengths, it is easier to help them overcome any weaknesses. Children have the potential to learn and grow from their own challenges, and should have the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them.
3) I am a teacher who collaborates with peers to evaluate student successes and opportunities for improvement.
Every teacher is a fountain of information and experience that we tend to take for granted.
Sharing ideas, instructional strategies and student interventions can fortify instruction and unify a school.
4) I am a teacher who appropriately groups my students to promote collective learning.
Students are social, and using those social skills to aid them in learning is an under utilized tool. Students learn to be accountable to one another and care for the entire class as a whole; creating a classroom community. Students need to be encouraged to take the responsibility to teach, as well as learn.
5) I am a teacher who identifies the specific learning styles of each individual student.
Every student learns in a unique way. Taking time to conference with students and to evaluate student work gives me immediate feedback. Through observing student's short-cycle assessments, mannerisms and classroom work; patterns can be recognized. Instruction can then be adapted to meet student needs.
6) I am a teacher who develops and creates individual, whole group, and small group student learning strategies.
Students are always developing and constructing their knowledge base. Children flourish in a safe and productive learning environment that respects each child's opinion and learning style. The combination of different educational structures allows me to reach all students.
7) I am a teacher that is always learning
I continually research new methods of teaching and best practices. I believe that my teaching philosophy will continue to change over time depending on new experiences and information. I am also willing to tackle any new challenges as an educator. I strive master my implementation of any new curriculum, research methodologies or current technology effectively and efficiently in the classroom.
